Twitter serves 140m tweets per day, 1 billion per week

San Francisco, Mar 15: The world's second largest social networking platform, Twitter said that the Twitter users around the globe have been sending an average of 140 million tweets per day, making it to nearly 1 billion tweets each week.

Ahead of its fifth birthday on Monday, Mar 21, Twitter updated a new post on its blog saying that the company is growing at a record pace since its launch in 2006. According to the post, Twitter took 3 years, 2 months and 1 day to achieve the one-billionth tweet mark.

"Five years ago this week, a small team of people started working on a prototype of the service that we now know as Twitter. On March 21, 2006, Jack Dorsey (@jack) sent the first Tweet," Twitter said on its blog.

Twitter said that the company managed 182 per cent increase in number of mobile users over the past year and more than 572,000 accounts were created on Mar 12, 2011 itself. Along with surging number of tweets, Twitter also increased its staff members. In Jan 2008, Twitter had 8 staffs, but the number reached to 400 by Mar 2011.
